As millions of sensors are being embedded into devices such as cell phones, computers, smart energy meters and other industrial machines, massive amounts of data are being generated every day, both by companies and consumers, and also about companies and consumers. The report refers to it as the growth of “big-data”, defined as “datasets with a size beyond the ability of a typical database tools to capture, store, manage and analyze”. This increasing flood of information has highlighted a need for information structuring and access, but also given way to new possibilities of how to make use of this data.
